Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University

Ten years after being closed due to earthquake damage, the Stanford Museum, renovated and expanded, reopened as part of the new Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts. The 120,000 SF Cantor Arts Center includes the historic Museum building (constructed in 1891), an enhanced Rodin Sculpture Garden, and a new wing with a bookstore, cafe, and space for special exhibitions.

This project included the complete restoration, renovation, seismic upgrading, and upgrading of mechanical and electrical systems of the existing 70,000 SF building, which was closed due to damage caused by the Loma Prieta Earthquake. The project also included a new 37,000 SF of additional space. The new design balances the spatial quality, materials, and craft of a late 19th-century landmark and the late 20th-century addition to affect a harmonious relationship between the two.

The 27 galleries of the Cantor Center exhibit a diverse range of artwork, from Renaissance paintings to African masks and dance staffs to Asian representations of the historical Buddha. Highlights include works by Jasper Johns, Georgia O'Keeffe, William de Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, and the most extensive collection of Auguste Rodin sculptures outside the Musée Rodin in Paris.
